
| A marker
commemorating Stewart and Early's march through the county seat can be
found from the north- and south-bound lanes of route 355. "Gen. J.E.B.
Stewart's Confederate cavalry occupied Rockville June 28, 1863, and captured
150 wagons along Washington Road. From here they marched to Gettysburg.
In July 1864, Gen. Jubal Early passed through Rockville on his way to and
from Washington."
The United Daughters of the Confederacy completed a statue of a cavalryman in 1913, which still may be seen on the north side of the old courthouse. Inscribed below the statue these words: |
