G race Church was founded in 1855 on the land on what is now Grace Church Road. Of rural parish, it was the only Episcopalian church in Silver Spring at the time. It was the church of the Blair family, which included Montgomery, postmaster general and member of the Union cabinet. It was also the church of the Lee family, which was related to the Commander-in-Chief of the Confederate army, Robert E. Lee. These families later formed the Blair Lees, who stayed with the church as active members for quite some time.
Found in the choir loft of
Grace Church are the North and South juxtaposed in stained glass. To the left is Major General
George W. Getty, a financier of the church when it was being built. To the
right is General Jubal Early, who gave a handsome sum of money towards
the construction of the church's roof.
